Rojak & Ma Zhi @Gurney Hawker Center, Penang

Posted by Taufulou | Labels: , , | Posted On Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 11:18 PM

When comes to public holiday or long weekend, this is the place that we locals Penang will try to avoid. First we will stuck in the jam. Second if we do go, its hard to find a parking spot. Third, if manage to find a parking spot its you have to fight for tables with all the local tourist crowd.

Gurney Hawker center actually had emerge as one of the hottest tourist spot for local Penang Hawker Food. You can get all the Penang favourites, Laksa, Char Koey Teow, Prawn Mee, Rojak and many more all in one area. With its open air concept and crowded area is what the ambiance that most tourist is looking for.

Last weekend which is Christmas weekend I was back to hometown and went to hunt my missing 'Ma Zhi' which I pronounce as 'Muar Chee' very much.

This is the Muar Chi stall which is located in the middle court area (middle location) next to the famous Char Koey Teow.

Busy preparing customer order and I have to wait mine.

Tadaaaa....my fav muar chi. Its warm and soft covered with smooth blended peanut sand crush top with fried onion is something I enjoy eating and I order it big just for myself RM2.

Next 'Rojak' of course in my list and by being one of my favourite rojak stall this is one the chosen beside GP Soon stall did not open and the one my all time favourite Macallum Street that added dry shrimps and peanuts..

Love my rojak to be a lil spicy and that is how he stir and stir.

and again tAdaaa....... my Rojak without cucumber and added meng kuang. Yummm....RM 5.

Again, this weekend I am going back to Penang for my cousins wedding and of course this place will sure be a disaster place again that is going to be pack with local and foreign tourist. For tourist, this place is a must go place to eat and visit. You will enjoy the atmosphere there. You will not get the best food here but just a great spot to be.

Last weekend were shopping around then thought of eating Penang food and always go to Little Penang Café, then I just remembered on whose blog that I have read, giving good review on this restaurant, so fast fast ask them change place to Gurney Drive.

When I reached there, I am quite surprise to see the crowd as it is not many. Can count with your 5 fingers but then what the heck, just trust that person’s taste. Never try never know!

They also bring in the ‘Beca’ to add in more feel on it.

This is what I mean, seriously not many people. The were like only 4-6 stalls operating ~

Just love the cover of the menu. Take closed up, makes you feel like you are row row row your boat.

Then the manager came by to greet us and also to take up our order. The best part is, he also know how to speak HOKKIEN. Kaki lang ah~ friendly person~

As usual, drink order first, so I decided to order the special promo drink of the day. 'Barley Ice' RM 1 (usual price RM3.80). Just by looking at it is just a mere normal bali ais loh~ but when I get to drink it that time, I am just falling in love with the drink. Not sweet, rich with barley taste which I like it thick compare the one offer in the kopitiam which is quite diluted or sweet. Highly Recommend!

Penang food, which one of the famous food to crave for is 'Penang Rojak'. The ‘Hae Ko’ just feel that it is lacking of some taste. Although the paste is quite sticky and thick but couldn’t tell what is it missing to make the extra umph in it~RM8.80

This 'Loh Bak Set Big' was this highly recommended by a blogger(which I forgot whom). The har peng is goring to crispy, which is very nice, loh bak – is rich with filling, when you even pick it up the compactness of the meat wouldn’t fall off easily. Goreng perfectly which doesn’t makes the skin over goring. Taufu and egg noting much to comment about as it taste normal. With the price RM16 which I thought pretty expensive, but turn out to be reasonable with the quality they are serving.

Usual hawker food which normally ppl wont miss is the 'Char Koey Teow'. I was abit disappointed when it got served because of the portion. I said, fine dining meh~…plate so big, portion so small, then my friend kacau me, want me to take soy sauce and sambal to help you conteng to look more perfect boh… ??

But after trying out, you will be surprise of the taste. It was fried to perfect, with the wok hei is there, quite dry and spiciness lvl just ngam.. We had not enough of it. Just finish within seconds. Highly Recommended! RM8.80

As I always never miss one of my favourite 'Curry Mee', before with the chili paste was put in, the taste of the soup is pretty pale, and santan taste is just abit.

After putting in a spoonful of chili paste, the whole bowl had turn to fiery red and it is not even spicy at all, just the colour but the taste had changed. It taste much better but still not the best. RM 8.80

Next item not to be miss 'Hokkien Mee'. The soup is quite rich in taste which is the most important thing in prawn mee. They gave generous amount of mee and bee hoon. It also comes with a few big pieces of prawns. With the charges of RM8.80 is pretty decent.

One of Penang signature is 'Penang Laksa'. Turns out to be not the best of all. The soup is quite clear, not rich in taste and fish chunks or fish blended that mix in the soup. It wasn’t serve very warm. By adding in prawn paste just makes it taste weirder. Charging at RM8.80

When comes to Penang desert, 'Ice Kacang' would consider as one of the item must try out or order. In this restaurant, I would say just thumbs up for this. We seriously enjoy salivating it. Hard to come across a nice ice kacang which the most important is the ice was blended very soft. Perfectly on it. Overall, wasnt too sweet on it, just a great desert to close the meal with. Highly Recommended RM3.80 ONLY.

Next would be the 'Teow Chew Cendol'. Again, the ice is soft, the gula melaka is not too sweet or they have just put the right amount on it and the santan feels like eating fresh. The coconut taste is there. I would just say, gone within 60 seconds. Also charge at RM 3.80

Overall, we are very satisfied with the food that they offer here which I feel it taste much better compare to Little Penang Cafe. Was just wondering after that, why the food is so nice, yet the ppl is so little. The pricing which I find it reasonable with the quality of food they are serving. Would surely come for second round.

Remarks:
Just feel that, they don have a QC in Char Koey Teow which we order the second plate, it doesnt taste nice at all compare to the first plate and also the amout of time we have waited is more than 20 minutes which we believe we are the only table ordering extra. Maybe the chef go and tangkap si ham.

G.P Soon Rojak @ Gurney Drive,Pg

This is one of my friend's favourite Rojak stall which I have always think that it is so so only but cannot denied that this stall business is much better compare to the rest of the rojak stall available there. My friend was 'ta pauing' and decided to try again for the rojak since like say till so nice and nice.
It was already 11.30pm this time and the people still flowing in to get the 'Rojak'. It is priced at RM3, RM5, RM8 and RM10. If you want to customise the pricing by yourself just let the seller know. They will do exactly what you want.

This is the Rojak that came out. It turn water very fast is because of the fruits. The gravy was not sticky enough like thick glue and still thinks that it is not as nice. Well, again, different people have different taste bud.. Still my best rojak stall is the 1 I like alot at Lebuh Macallum, Rojak.

If you are looking for better Rojak at Gurney Drive Hawker center, we still thinks that this stall has better taste although the seller is a bit LANSI(celaka), Penang Best Rojak.

Bali Hai Seafood Restaurant @ Gurney, Penang

Posted by Taufulou | Labels: , , , | Posted On Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 11:19 AM

This trip back to Penang I have not much time to hunt back my favourite food but manage to go for my favourite restaurant. Bali Hai @ Gurney. They had a few signature dish that I always would order. For those who are going to Penang for this festive season, MUST not miss this nice restaurant because they do serve fresh seafood, instead of most of the time, penangites will drive to Tambun for fresh seafood. This restaurant is another alternative.

This is the reastaurant outlook where you drive passby, will attract your attention because of its crowd and also their decoration as there are a few tables uniquely decorate and isolated from other table with the like of kampung, atap style infront of the restaurant.

This is whereby they store all the fresh seafood's.

Fresh lobster good in shasimi and cheeze baked. Mouth watering.....

More options to choose from, if you do not know how to choose fresh, just Tembak lah!!! or ask the person to assist~

This restaurant is usually damm packed on the weekend. If you decided to go around weekend or public holidays, the best time to reach is before 7.30pm. Easy parking inside the restaurant and easy table to get. If you reach after 8pm, ermmm..you can expect to wait a bit.

This is what me and my parents had ordered, 'Kam Hiong Lala(longer version)' Actually, this does not goes well with longer version and not a good combo of kam hiong with this. Usually I ordered in fried with chilies. Trying new taste. Definitely I ate most of it because of the nice taste. The lala also fresh.

This is their 'Signature Taufu'. Definitely must try. Inside the taufu are stuffed with small prawns or what we call 'heh bi'(hokkien) and it is fried and abit salty. It is very soft in the inside and very nice aroma of the 'heh bi', goes very well if you are eating with rice.

Wah!!! This is definitely my favourite dish. 'Wong Kam Har(prawn)' Whatever with Wong Kam defiantly taste nice. The lady ask us to try with the prawn after peel the skin. So decided to go along with it. But definitely does not really taste as nice with prawn with their shell. So therefore do not request to ask them to remove the prawn shell. Taste better with it. You can ask them to do 'Wong Kam Crab' and Wong Kam something something. It is also nice.

The taste of it, is just similar what I eat back in Melbourne, Chinatown which is the restaurant is called Desert House. Lol. For those who are in Melbourne you should know.

The taste of the Wong Kam is rich with century egg, butter smell, and when you lick it, the taste of butter and the century egg will just stick on your tongue and slowly melt. With saltiness yet the 'harumness' of the taste kam hiong leaves, you must just not miss this.

This is another one of my favourite dish. 'Curry Fish Head'. One of their signature also but to much disappointment, this usually I ordered it was very fresh and the curry is nice. Tonight, everything does not goes well, the curry taste weird like put in the fridge overnight and reheat it, the fish head is not fresh whereby the meat is hard. It is suppose to be soft and easy to slice it. Definitely I do complain 'kau kau' to the captain.

This restaurant worth to go, cuz they do have first class service, 3 table to 1 waiter/waitress. When ever your plate is dirty, they will directly change for you to a new plate. Five star service you can expect and the waiter and waitress there are definitely friendly. Suits my dad cuz he loves to talk alot to people.

If you had not a fresh seafood on that night, please do complain, as we do get RM40 off on our bill, whereby we just paid around RM96 after complain of the curry fish head. Cuz customer is their priority.

Location:

This restaurant is Located along Gurney whereby it is in the middle of that stretch.

If you coming from Gurney Hotel(left) go straight and after you see Pelita Mamak, slow down. It is nearby there

If you are coming from Gurney Plaza(right) you will have to past Silverton Condo, and bout 300Meter, it is just nearby there.
