Old Winston Cafe Tim Sum Opposite KDU College @ Jalan Anson,Penang

If you are talking about school holidays or public holiday and any part of the hawker center you visit in Penang is gonna be crazy. As I was back during that holiday period and my dad were asking me to go for tim sum, its very hard to drag my ass up but then just have to cause its been a while since last breakfast with them and my dad ask me to choose the location. Usually our usual Tim Sum area would be Tai Tong as the price and the food quality definitely our first choice but since I have blog on that place and I chose to come to this tim sum place opposite KDU which is quite famous too.

As I forgot the name of this place as me and my friends usually called it Opposite KDU. If any of you out there do know the name please let me know. Thanks`

During holiday season, this would be the kind of crowd you would expect. To get a table, you have to learn to take care of your territory when people are finishing their meal. It is because those people would either ask their mom which is 50-60 years old or their kids to pretend to sit down then act like it was like they came first and wave to their family members to faster come over. This happens to me and I politely tell them that I was there already and the auntie act like nothing happens till the family member were there and told them the same thing and act like noting happen too. That piss me off and I scold them! Then they just walk off.

In this period of time, there would be hardly a cart that will be pushing around, and there is too, but when it will take a few rounds to reach your place. To make things easier you can just take a tray and directly go to their counter, to pick and choose those tim sum you want, would be much faster compare you have to wait.

Did not take much of the Tim Sum because wasn’t really hungry.. Just woke up not long and my stomach engine have not warm up yet.

My dad saw a lot of people ordering ‘Fish Head Noodle’ and he went to order too. Not a very good choice of pick as the soup is tasteless and taste like cooking it with boiling water with the added on of vegetable, ‘fried chu yau cha’ and fried fish head.

My sis wanted to eat the ‘Wan Tan Mee with Char Siew’ not my choice of it also. Quite pale in taste, yet taste a bit weird too.

‘Honey Dew Sago’ which is quite okay but too much milk taste and the honeydew in it is not sweet yet could taste the sugar syrup taste more.

As for overall, the food there is so so but really cannot deny that, the food there is very very cheap or would be one of the cheapest. As for us the total bill came less than RM45 for 5 of us and I did saw a table of 10, they have collected and filled their table full with tim sum that only left a small place for their plates and drinks only and cam whore with it.

If you are looking for a cheap plate for tim sum, this would be the place to eat in but you have to be on par with their food quality.

Tutti Frutti @ Sunway Pyramid

Recently I went to Pyramid and meet up with Masako as she said she wanted to get a camera DSLR too and want me to follow her along. As on that morning went for food hunting at Klang and it was on the way so meet her up. After checking out a dummy camera at SenQ(if not mistaken) then I walk out and saw this shop, at first I thought the shop was selling refregirator but then I saw people walking out with something on their hand that can eat. So I walk over and kaypo abit only realise that it was a yougurt desert shop then only notice their brand name.

Never heard of the name before but never care and wanted to try, and after google it a bit and found out that this yogurt desert is from USA and a franchise around the world. Sunway Pyramid being their very first outlet and it will expand quite fast as this Franchise was recently purchase by NAZA group.

When I look back at this picture, I still think that from this side view witout looking at the counter it still look like a place selling refregirator..kekek

First step you will take a cup from the side area, ranging from small to big and then you will head to these machines to pump out your favourite choice of yogurt flavor or you can mix around. It feels like you are working inside the MacD kiosk ice cream counter.

7 flavours are available at the moment.

Masako pump out 3 flavours, Chocolate, Lychee and Original.
I love 3 of the flavours, very flavourful with its own taste and the yogurt is very soft and very strong yogurt taste which I like it and did not overpower the flavors of it. It will be only my one time experience as it will dig up a hole in your pocket.

Then you head to this very next counter for.................

Choose and add in your topings.

You can end up with these.

and you definately must guess how much is this cup of yogurt as Masako as us to guess it too. To my shoking price it cost RM20. For such a cup it will be the most expensive ice cream yogurt I ever eaten. How it is calculated as below:

10g for RM0.53

With that kind of price this are the size of the cup which is the medium cup.

and its not full too and both of them said that, luckily it was not me that took the ice cream. They really understand me well. If for me I will pull the ice creal till very high and add on alot of toppings as with my understanding how much will it cost only la.

Then we saw a malay family came in with 2 kids, 2 of their wife's went to pull the ice cream too and they took a large cup each. They have the same thought like me, pulling it alot and high then top up with alot of toppings and then reach the cashier. 3 of us were very curious about the pricing and keep peeking on it and we start guessing, the same goes to the chinese couple sitting next to us, peeking at it too...

Their charges per cup was around RM39, they got shock on the pricing and ask their husband for extra money. 2 cups of frozen yougurt RM78... I believe its a good marketing strategy which is you cannot refund back the ice cream to them cuz you made it yourself and you have to pay for what you have done.

With their charges like that, I have to say that, they will be the most expensive yogurt desert that is even more expensive than Haegan Das and Baskin.

It sure taste good, but will return back when they change their price.

Papa Rich @ Kuchai Lama

I have always been wondering when I pass this shop no matter day or night, its always quite pack. It is that nice were the question I have been asking myself...cuz I have a very bad experience with their Sunway Branch. Till we went to lunch for the Shabu Shabu next door and they said, har..not that kind they prefer then we shifted to this shop and I start to say, weiii..don wan this shop can ah, then most of them agree here then what can I say some more. So just tag along la..

Papa Rich interior design is always kinda exclusive kopitiam concept as when I stayed at my aunts place at Seapark there are 1 Papa Rich also which is quite pack with people and the same with Old Town. Currently I would rate that Old Town main competitor is Papa Rich which had been mushrooming like crazee. Popping up in most of the makan makan area.

In the menu, picture illustration is even better than Old Town but the only thing to test on was their quality of food.

'Kopi Si Peng' was strong in coffee flavour but disappointing the ais is to much which for a few sips its gone. Left the ice-bone.

Their 'Kaya and Butter Toast' which is a bit different because they separate it out and let you spread it over yourself and the best part is the give you the whole slice of butter. The bread was bakar to crispiness on the edge and spread kaya and butter given is just very nice.
'Nasi Lemak' which the rice is cook with some santan which we prefer and the curry chicken is not that spicy, a bit lemak and the sambal is just nice. Not too spicy but eat along just pull up the taste of the dish.

I love their version of 'Curry Mee' which is very lemak and a bit thick in soup base. A bit spicy yet the soup is boiling hot which suits to my likings and I eat till sweating all over.

'Prawn Mee' look very disappointed but we were surprise by the taste of it. It was serve very oily base and we slowly scoop it off and left a bit which its original version should be and the soup base is very flavourful, taste like they had take the prawn shell to crush and cook with it. Its very sweet prawn shell base aroma and added in the chili making it spicy is just perfect yet its boiling hot.

'Dry Ipoh Koey Teow' which I find it nothing special to talk about as there are better ones.

I have lost the receipt but I can say that the price is slightly more expensive than Old Town but for this branch I definitely do not mind to come here again and its a good place for hang out with friends too.

Restaurant Goon Wah @ Kuchai Lama

Posted by Taufulou | Labels: , , , | Posted On Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 11:17 PM

I could not help but to blog this wonderfull food that I have eaten yesterday as the double K’s brought the whole making gang to this place which they had been talking for quite sometime till ‘yesterday’ only bring us makan.

As I have always mark Kuchai Lama business park as one of my food hunting ground yet neither did I know that, there is another hidden restaurant next area to it. We reach around 12pm and it was already 95% occupied. Left 3 big tables and we occupied one and Karen told us that, usually the place would be very very pack after 12.30pm.

What we order was everything from the wall. The 5 dishes which is their signature dish.

Oder their ‘Longan Leong Sui’ lack of flavor and it would taste very nice if the longan aroma added strong her and also add in some sweetness.

If you are very sleepy in the morning or even lunch and loves something sour.. 'Lime Juice with Sour Plum’ is something that will make your eyes wide open like a star blinking. Its very sour kam kat and sour plum taste had blended well with it. A perfect combination, recommended.

Another drink not to be miss, their ‘Kopi Peng’ as we ended up ordering 4 extra cups. We love it as it was strong in taste, yet the structure of it its like sticking on the glass, with a bit of burn coffee powder taste not too bitter but suit to our taste. Recommended too.

Our very first dish, ‘Mix Fried Pig Intestine’, the moment the waiter put down the dish, the rest were already taking their chopstick and ready to attack this dish and I have to stop them cuz I have not take a picture. I have to take it fast as I felt the pressure is there, if I do not take it fast the chopstick will ended poking up in my nose.

The moment I said I finish taking pictures, left half of the plate and it was gone within minutes. We love the texture of it, it was something chewy as all of us love it, the sauce is salty enough to eat along and the best part is the intestine is a bit smelly of its taste yet eat along with the fried pig oil and dried shrimps is just something you would not want to miss. We reorder again. Also gone within minutes. Highly recommended.

'Guinness Stout Chicken Wingz' I have always heard that cook a dish with Guinness and have not tried it till yesterday. Ohhhh, I can just tell you that I am loving it. By just smelling the dish I already cannot wait to eat it. For the very first bite of the mini drumstick I fell in love with the flavor. Something thick and rich in flavor and the soft chicken meat had just making us wanted to eat more. Andy was like, emm..this is good, emmm. . . this is just so good. Then Andy complain that, nah, see la…told you guys to order big 1.

I have tried quite anumber of places with its very own ‘X.O Claypot Fish Head Noodle’ but this have its taste of its own. There is a bit sour, yet a bit milk creamy, with a bit strong taste of ginger yet the soup is very clear is something that I do not really know how to describe but the taste is definitely unique compare to the one I have tasted before. Its good.

‘Claypot Lou Shi Fun’ caught my attention the most of how they serve it. With a very square wooden box look alike and the claypot was put in the middle of the box. Strong aroma when it was serve and of course it needed to be stir.

The after effect was, it taste not bad with you manage to eat abit of the crunchy burn lou shi and it’s a bit dry as I like it not too dry, with mince meat and the flavor of the burning taste is there. Not a bad dish after all. What is lacking was with an egg.

'Braised Pork Belly with Man Tou' I love the taste of the gravy but the meat provided consist of 10% meat and 90% fats. Particularly is like eating fats that makes me geli but then I remember that eating along with the man tou gives it the oomph of it, and here is my very own version of wrapping.

Add on the sauce and wrap and eat along, yet still I cannot eating with the fats oozing out from the bun just makes me geli. If the fats and the meats we given equally, it would be nice to much with the soft warm man tou.

We really did enjoy the meal here and looking forward to revisit. A place I am recommending. The sad thing is they do not open on weekend as they are very busy for catering. Well, that just leaves us an option of weekdays then. Total bills come to RM118 for 7 person which I think the price is okay with the quality of the food but some of them do not like the lou shi fun. It is advisable to go to this place early to avoid dissapointment.

Biffi Burger and Fried Tom Yam Noodle @ Seh Poh Kio - Jalan Ayer Itam, Pg

Posted by Taufulou | Labels: , , , , | Posted On at 11:13 PM

Last trip of back to Penang, the first thing when I reach back after dumping all my luaguage back at home and went to pick up my friend, heading to Seh Poh Kio for supper. There are very limited places in Penang to hunt for Chinese food during at night after 12am. I was craving for burger that night around 1.30am.

The business of this stall its good at most of the time, depends on your luck when you dropping by that you have to wait long or wait for a while. Luckily on that night I did not wait for long as I was the 3rd person only.

The stall owner is the one leg kick person. Cook, wrap, and sell

My order was 'Chicken Burger Special' (Pg version means with Cheese and egg) as I love the version here as one of the best, well cook that preserve the taste of the slice of the chicken meat and well wrap around with the ngam ngam cook egg and top with a slice of cheese and cover with a layer of mayonnaise. RM4 if not mistaken.

Besides this stall that I usually enjoy eating from the thai hawker stall behind it was the ‘Fried Tomyam Maggie Mee’ a style of its own, not too spicy yet soury and filled with mini seafood is a taste that I am missing but on that night, the taste had change not as nice as it used to be. Still not bad but not as craving taste already. RM5
